Why is STEAM Education Important?
For far too long in education, we’ve been working with the presumption of teaching to ensure our students get a “good job”. But what does that look like? We are at a point where it is not only possible, but imperative that we facilitate learning environments that are fluid, dynamic, and relevant to our constantly changing world.
SCIENCE
Science is a key part of STEAM education, teaching students important critical thinking skills, as well as a structured method for testing theories and evaluating evidence. Best of all, many of these skills are transferable, allowing them to be used not only in other STEAM fields but also in everyday life, too.
ENGINEERING
Engineering in STEAM education is of growing importance due to the sheer demand for engineers world wide. Engineering is especially reliant on each of the other fields. It does not have the same long history of being taught as a standalone subject.
MATH
Considered by some as the true universal language, Mathematics has been a major factor in building our history and shaping our future and is a key component of any STEAM program. Math is literally everywhere as an integral part of all fields of study - unequivocally used by all, regardless of culture, religion and gender. Any student can master math given an ideal learning environment,
TECHNOLOGY
Out of the five STEAM education fields, technology is arguably the most abstract in terms of its relationship to academia partly because technology is constantly evolving, but also because technology is less established as a clearly defined academic subject than science or mathematics.
THE ARTS
The arts teach creativity and discipline. When the arts are used as a method of instruction, it encourages students to think in a non-linear fashion. what could be more valuable in the modern, information-driven world than a rising workforce that can think creatively and solve problems in new and different ways?
ROBOTICS
Robotics is EXCITING and it incorporates important STEAM concepts. One of the fastest growing industries in the 21st century, the robotics market has more than doubled in the last few years offering great career opportunities.
Robots are a favorite with children of all ages. Nowadays many STEAM educators use established concepts to introduce STEAM to their students.
