My Never-Ending Story
Hello - -朋友們 -- My name is Christine Calanchie and I am your candidate for School Trustee in the York Region District School Board in the beautiful Wards 3 and 4 of Markham, Ontario.
Originally from Westmount, Quebec, I was educated in the Quebec public school system through Grade 11 and graduated from McGill University (Management and Accounting).
Much has changed in Markham over the years. Fields where cows used to graze are now home to new Markham residents. The 407/ETR highway did not exist - nor did the YMCA and the Pan Am Centre, the Angus Glen, Aanin and Cornell Community Centres, York University. No one could have foreseen the COVID-19 that descended upon us for so long and disrupted our lives - including and especially those of school aged children.
Similar to other candidates running for School Trustee in the upcoming election taking place on October 16-26, 2026, I too have lived in Unionville for more than 30 years and have been active in supporting school children and their parents; but this was always done in the background. I was not out for the recognition; however, seeing the results of the Candidates who have been elected, in part due to my canvassing efforts, I have decided to step forward and enter my name as a Candidate for YRDSB School Trustee Wards 3 and 4.
The Provincial Government feels that the School Trustee System is failing and has begun the process of dismantling it. Hopefully, if new Trustees with fresh ideas are elected in the upcoming election, the Government will pause this dismantling process and give us time to prove that new Trustees with new ideas are valuable to the educational system.
This is not a steppingstone for me. I am not using this as a means to move up the political ladder – the positions of Ward Councillor or Regional Councillor are not in my future. My only focus will be to help all families in Markham. Any change can only be initiated from within the system.
COVID-19 is now in the rear window and yet remnants of that terrible time persist. It is time for new and fresh ideas to prepare students for a 'new' future, job prospects that differ so dramatically from just three years ago. Emphasis on S.T.E.A.M. has to be addressed, as well as the fast growing and sometimes invasive AI (Artificial Intelligence); and children who are not interested in University should be encouraged to enter the workforce through the Trades - an area which has been often maligned. Please consider me as your new Ward 3 and 4 School Trustee.
